Youth Performing Arts School's SPOTLIGHT ON BROADWAY

A Spotlight on Broadway showcases Ballet Petite's Showtime and Encores performers. Featuring choreography from a variety of genres, including Hip-Hop, Jazz, Tap, and of course Musical Theatre, this show represents the talent of our youngest triple-threats. After all, it's not a single light that makes a marquee; it's the dozens of tiny lights together that spell BROADWAY. Without one of the many bulbs, the show couldn't go on, and a single dancer makes all the difference. Congratulations to all Encores and Showtimers. Together, you really brought a spotlight to Broadway!

Grinch 2000

Today I had the pleasure of teaching the Winter Dance Spectacular for our 7-12 year old dancers. What a shock they had when they came in, dressed for ballet, and heard Grinch 2000 blasting!

We compromised by including a little Hip Hop, Jazz, and Ballet in our dance. What a fun day!

Hannah Montana- Party in the USA! Camp

I spent this afternoon getting ready for next week's camps--specifically, our Got Hip Hop! Camp. We knew from the get-go this was going to be an exceptionally popular camp, as the Hip Hop genre has just EXPLODED in Betheda since we first started to offer it last fall. This camp in particular was just so heavily requested (obviously every little girl LOVES Hannah Montana!) that we had to up our limit from 12 to 16 and schedule two teachers!

Week 2- Off to a Great Start!

Week 2 of summer camps have just begun, and we're off to a terrific start! This week introduces our newest camp, Got Hip Hop?, and BOY is it popular! This camp runs from 9-3 each day for our 5-7 year olds, and it is nearly filled even though we've never run it before!

Additionally, this week we're running our "Broadway Baby" camp for 3-5 years for the first time this summer. The kids are doing "Annie"-- ALWAYS a huge hit!

RECITALS

Well, this weekend was a recital MARATHON! With 2 shows on Saturday and 3 on Sunday, we are all pretty exhausted this morning! The shows were wonderful, though. Each and every student had their moment to shine, and boy did they eat it up! The costumes were exquisite, and the talent was overwhelming!

Just one more recital to go next Saturday, and I think I speak for us all when I say I can't wait!

And so it begins..

What a crazy morning! Today is Day 1 of our 3 recital days. The phone was ringing off the hook from the moment I walked in today, with questions about tickets, call times, attire, pretty much everything under the sun pertaining to recitals.

Attendance was low because so many students were either performing or supporting their siblings and friends who were performing. We had some wonderful teachers come in to sub for those teachers who had to be at recitals today with their classes, and I think that everyone had just a wonderful time!

I can't wait for my class to perform tomorrow!

Memorial Day

Well, today is the last Saturday before Memorial Day Weekend. We're closed for the 3-day weekend, and I know everyone is looking forward to a break before recital madness REALLY sets in! Visitor's Week in Bethesda is being stretched out over the next few Saturdays (beginning this weekend) as some of our teachers will be gone for the next 3 weekends at Recitals with their other students.

Visitor's Week is such an exciting time, especially for our younger students. As they don't get to participate in the recitals, Visitor's Day is their equivalent, when they are given a moment to shine and show off all they have learned over the session. Guests are invited to watch a class and get an idea of the structure and balance of the class, as well as to link the faces with the names they hear about all the time!

Sophie

Recitals

The countdown to recitals begins! This year we're running SIX RECITALS! So many little dancers are so excited to perform! Our youngest ballerinas will be starring in "Thumbelina"-- two different shows (because we have so many 5 year olds!) on Saturday 6/5 at 10:30 for our Bethesda students and Saturday 6/12 at 1:30 for our McLean, Cabin John, and Kentlands students. Each class will take on a different scene from the beloved children's story, and they will dance out the story with their teachers at the lead!

Our 6 year old show promises to be WONDERful, as they dance their way through everyone's favorite "Alice in Wonderland." The performance on Saturday 6/5 at 2:00 will surely be a magical experience for dancers and audience alike!

Every young dancer longs to perform in a real ballet, and that's just what our 7 and 8 year olds will be doing for their recital. "Sleeping Beauty" is the perfect ballet for this age group, as it acts as both a well-known Princess tale and an all-time favorite ballet. The performance on Sunday 6/6 at 11:00 will be unforgettable.

Our Musical Theatre, Tap, Jazz, and Hip Hop classes ages 5-8 will be performing their favorite variations in "A Spotlight on Broadway" on Sunday 6/6 at 4:00. This diverse show will have you tapping your toes and clapping your hands from start to finish!

For our older students in all genres, we hold a "Spring Concert" on Sunday 6/6 at 7:30. Here, our polished performers will get the opportunity to show off their skills, dancing to their favorite songs.

Dancers are rehearsing hard, our Production Warehouse is working non-stop to sew an unimaginable amount of costumes, and our office staff is holding down the fort as tickets for these shows sell like wild fire!

Keep Dancing,
Sophie
