The Nutcracker was first performed in St. Petersburg on Sunday, 18 December 1892. The original production was not a success, but the twenty-minute
suite that Tchaikovsky extracted from the ballet was better received
.The first complete performance outside Russia took place in England in 1934. The ballet's first complete United States performance was on December 24, 1944 by the San Francisco Ballet. The
complete Nutcracker has enjoyed enormous popularity since the
late 1960's and is now performed by countless ballet companies including Ballet Petite and Youth Performing Arts School's Ballet Performance School. We will be performing our rendition at American University's Greenberg Theatre.
