Butterflies in our Tummies

Spring Session in the Youth Performing Arts School means recital time! Dancing, like most art forms, is meant to be shared. We work hard, we go to class, we practice, we sweat, and we put together a piece for performance. That creation of a work of art, of a piece of dance, is the  fruition of all of a dancer's hard work. It's a collective experience, not only between dancer and audience, but also among dancers. It's hard work putting together a recital, but once we've put in all the work in class, we'll be so glad to be on stage! The lights will come up, the audience will quiet, and we'll dance! Each piece brings more, another chapter of the story. At the end of a great show, we'll all be exhausted, exhilarated, and a little desolate that the show is over.

Despite the excitement that recital brings, despite the difficulty that rehearsals present, sometimes getting on stage the day of the show is the hardest part. Want to know the name of that jittery, jumpy, down-right nauseating feeling in the pit of your stomach? We call it the "butterflies". Don't worry. We all get them. They're the little fluttery creatures in our tummies responsible for our nervousness and for our excitement as the curtain rises and the audience quiets. They're the little reminders our bodies give us to let us know that the performance is special and not just another dance class. They're jumping around inside, clamoring to get a glimpse of the audience before the curtain opens, to see if our parents are watching. The butterflies are nervous, and their excitement makes us nervous. Perhaps we'll forget our steps or trip and hurt ourselves. Maybe we'll be too embarrassed or too shy to dance in front of an audience filled with strangers and our own families. But take a deep breath and remember to have fun! Get excited with those butterflies. It's not every day we get to perform, and it's a reason to celebrate!

"Take a deep breath and just smile. A lot of things can be forgiven with a beautiful smile" -Miss Stephanie

So let's not worry about forgetting steps and tripping. Let's put that smile on our faces and dance along with the butterflies! Remember we're all rooting for you, and we'll be waiting there with our applause ready.

JUST TRYAN IT

Last week, Ballet Petite was approached by JUST TRYAN IT, a local non-profit organization working to support families with children fighting cancer at Georgetown University Hospital's pediatric oncology unit. This week, May 19th through May 25th, was Sponsor Challenge Week; many local businesses agreed to pledge matching funds while the young participants work to fundraise. Ballet Petite is proud to be a part of such a wonderful campaign! We made a pledge of $350 alongside dozens of other local businesses.

JUST TRYAN IT's main event this year will be the kids' triathlon at Landon School in Bethesda for ages 6 through 14 on Sunday, June 16th. All race participants have the option to fundraise.

This wonderful organization is working not only to raise money but also to educate children on the importance and power of philanthropy. We wish them all the luck in the world, and thank them for inviting us to participate! Check out their website at http://justtryanit.com/, follow them on Twitter, find them on Facebook, and come join the 1000 people in attendance at the triathlon on June 16th!

McLean Day

MCLEAN DAY is a hometown celebration, held once every year in Lewinsville Park. Every year, Ballet Petite and other local businesses and performance groups gear up for an exciting day out in the fields, celebrating our beautiful little town of McLean, Virginia.

This year was no different. For a week, busy bees Miss Ellen, Miss Sarah, and Miss Samantha worked gathering costumes, tulle, crowns, and cut-outs to prepare for the big day! With Saturday, May 18th dawning, the piled their big truck high with Ballet Petite magic and headed for the Park.

Belle from Beauty and the Beast came for a little visit and to help out Miss Sarah and Miss Ellen pass out Ballet Petite crowns for all! Belle stayed and delighted hearts throughout the day.

National Cherry Blossom Parade Tappers

Saturday, April 13th meant the National Cherry Blossom Parade in Washington, DC! And Ballet Petite's own Tappers joined 400 more tap dancers to dance in the Parade. After weeks of rehearsal, the girls performed with umph and pizzazz, and of course, they had a blast! Miss Lori was their fabulous tapping coach and chaperone, and she snapped some photos to highlight the day!
