Meet Miss Andrea!

Miss Andrea is really happy to be on board starting her second year with Ballet Petite. Starting at the age of two with ballet, her military upbringing has allowed her to be exposed to many different styles and techniques. Miss Andrea graduated with her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance Performance with minors in Elementary Education and Psychology from Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia.

Along with dance, Miss Andrea plays the clarinet! With this skill she was fortunate enough to be a performer in the Opening Ceremonies of the 2002 Olympics in Sydney, Australia.

Miss Andrea not only loves ballet, but all forms of dance. She has had the opportunity to dance the leading roles in several ballets including The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, and Cinderella, but was also honored at the National ACDFA dance conference in Ohio for a dynamic modern solo dedicated to Hurricane Katrina.

Miss Andrea's favorite part of teaching at Ballet Petite is watching her students grow. She finds it so fulfilling to meet them in a younger class when they might be having a hard time adjusting to classes and coming in without mom and watching their independence grow as they find it easier.

More fun facts about Miss Andrea:

Her favorite color is indigo. She has lived in over 20 states and her favorite place to live was California. She has one brother. She helped start a non-profit dance program for children when she lived in Florida. She loves Reeces Pieces!

Miss Andrea will be teaching this fall at various locations with Ballet Petite!

What's New This Week!

Welcome to the sixth week of camp! We are over halfway through our summer camps, and we still receive registrations everyday for camps coming up and the Fall 2010 session. We make a strong effort to keep our schedule online as up-to-date as possible, so keep checking in for new updates!


Next week in Bethesda, we start our Ballet Intensive Camp with Miss Melissa for the next two weeks. It's from 9-3 each day, and they will be working on a production of Coppelia. If you have a child who's age 8 or above, you won't want to miss this camp! We also have limited availability in Magical Morning Camp for 2.5-3.5 years old (theme is Garden Delights), Tutu Sweet Ballerina Camp for 3 & 4 years old (theme is Tanya & The Magic Wardrobe), Tappin' Toes for 3-5 years old (theme is Jailhouse Rock), Happily Ever After Princess Camp for 4 & 5 years (theme is Rapunzel), and American Girl Camp for 5-7 years old (theme is Kristen).


In McLean, we are offering the new daily camps each day which are rapidly becoming very popular! We also have limited availability in Magical Morning Camp for 2.5-3.5 years old (theme is Cuddly Bears), Broadway Baby Camp for 3-5 years old (theme is Beauty and The Beast), and Happily Ever After Princess Camp for 4 & 5 years old (theme is Angelina at the Palace).

In Potomac, we are offering the daily camps and the theme is A Magical Journey. This includes stories such as The Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, The Ugly Duckling, The Firebird, and Jack and the Beanstalk.

In the Kentlands, we are also offering the daily camps and the theme is Animal Kingdom. This should be a fun one! This includes stories such as Giraffe's Can't Dance, The Carnival of the Animals, Where the Wild Things Are, Rainbow Fish, and 101 Dalmatians.

Book Review: The Story of the Tooth Fairy

The tooth fairy is a tradition that is passed through generations of people all over the world. The Story of the Tooth Fairy, by Tom Paxton explores the origins of where the tooth fairy came from and how this custom began.

It begins with a fairy named Glynnis who meets a seven year old girl named Emily. Emily is skeptical of Glynnis initially, however the two then become friends and agree to meet the following day. Glynnis then goes back to her queen to tell her about the mortal she just met, and finds out that fairies and mortals were friends long ago, however a rumor spread that fairies were mischief makers and soon their bond was broken.

After learning of Glynnis’ connection with Emily, the queen asks for her to bring a token of her friendship with her, but only one “a mortal could give.” Glynnis returned to Emily’s house and finds to her excitement that they are friends, and they devise a plan to bring mortals and fairies back together. They agree to give each other friendship gifts, and Glynnis promises to bring Emily a coin in exchange for one of Emily’s baby teeth that was about to fall out. To keep the tooth safe, Emily keeps it under her pillow, and Glynnis leaves a coin under her pillow while she’s asleep and takes the tooth.

When Glynnis returns with the tooth, the queen names her the Tooth Fairy and a friend to all children. They have a building in their village where coins are kept, and the queen says “when every coin is replaced with a tooth, our friendship with the mortals will be renewed, never to be broken again.” This is how the Tooth Fairy came to be.

Full of richly beautiful illustration by Robert Sauber, The Story of the Tooth Fairy is a charming and dreamy story for children of all ages. Instead of focusing on how much they receive under their pillow, the story evokes the anticipation of the Tooth Fairy’s visit instead. This treasured book is brought to life by our young ballerina’s.

Recital DVDs are Coming!

Recital seems like it was so very long ago! Yet at the same time, it feels like it was just yesterday! Parents and students, I know you have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of your DVDs. I remember what it was like when I was growing up and how I would wait all summer long for my recital video (only my senior year of high school were things advanced enough that we received a DVD instead of a VHS!). I can remember running down the driveway to my mailbox and checking for the video day, after day, after day!

Well- the time has come! DVDs have been put in the mail and should arrive very soon; photos will be mailed directly from the photographer very soon, as well!

Yesterday I had the opportunity to view the DVDs of the two recitals in which I had students: Spotlight on Broadway and Spring Concert. Boy, was I proud! All of the students gave a stellar performance. They sang and danced their hearts out! I was especially proud of my students in Another Openin’, Another Show’ for not looking into the wings for help; they didn’t need me and did it all by themselves!

As for my older students (One More Angel in Heaven), I was proud to see their acting skills come across so well on stage and on camera! For the young triple threat, it’s easy to forget a piece: you dance your heart out and suddenly realize you’re not singing, you’re dancing and singing but forget that you’re supposed to act angry, or sad, or whatever it is the character is feeling! Well, this didn’t happen to my triple threats! They kept all three pieces alive and strong throughout their performance; I couldn’t have been prouder!!!

Question of the Week!

Every week, I will be introducing a question brought to us from a parent. I hope you find these questions and answers to be helpful!

Question: "Why do you require a uniform?"

Answer: As our children age up, we find it advantageous to have uniforms to identify each level. The children really look forward to getting a different color each year to mark their division and grade up. Wearing a uniform gives the students the feeling of a community or a team. Most activities require a uniform and/or special equipment, like sports. The leotard will be worn for the full year.

Most parents find it convenient to be able to purchase the required uniform in our shop which is typically open 7 days a week during the school year. We also offer to ship uniforms for a small shipping fee!

Hannah Montana- Party in the USA! Camp

I spent this afternoon getting ready for next week's camps--specifically, our Got Hip Hop! Camp. We knew from the get-go this was going to be an exceptionally popular camp, as the Hip Hop genre has just EXPLODED in Betheda since we first started to offer it last fall. This camp in particular was just so heavily requested (obviously every little girl LOVES Hannah Montana!) that we had to up our limit from 12 to 16 and schedule two teachers!

Paul Taylor at Wolf Trap

Last night I attended my first performance at the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts. What a treat! I went with a bunch of my girlfriends, who are not dancers themselves, but enjoy watching as much as I enjoy doing!

Last night’s performance was by the Paul Taylor Dance Company. For those of you who haven’t heard of Paul Taylor before, he is known as the youngest member of the pantheon who created American modern dance (along Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, and others). Paul Taylor, now in his 80th year on the dance scene, “…continues to offer cogent observations on life’s complexities while tackling some of society’s thorniest issues” (read more on his website: http://www.ptdc.org/about-artists/paul-taylor-bio).

The Wolf Trap performance did not disappoint! The performance included three separate dance pieces: Also Playing, Phantasmagoria, and Beloved Renegade. Ballerina Camp- Lili at the Ballet

This week our Tutu Sweet Ballerina Camp is doing "Lili at the Ballet." Our ballerinas always particularly enjoy reading stories about other ballerinas, and this book in particular seems to be a big hit! I walked by the studio today while the girls were doing their story dance, and they were dressed in pink from head to toe, standing at the barre doing plies! What fun!

Meet Miss Kasey!

This week on our teacher showcase we meet Miss Kasey! Miss Kasey is a new teacher with us this year at Ballet Petite, and quickly became one of our most beloved instructors. She is also currently the Ballet Department Director for Ballet Petite. Here are a few facts about Miss Kasey to get to know her better!

What is your dance background?
"I graduated from Point Park University with a B.A. in Dance and a minor in English. While attending Point Park, I studied ballet, modern, jazz and tap under some amazing performers. I have performed myself in ballets such as Les Sylphides, Etudes, and Giselle. I have also danced the role of Clara in Ballet Northeast's Nutcracker!"

Tell us about where you're from.
"I am originally from Scranton, Pennsylvania, which is where the show The Office is based. I love The Office! From when I first moved here in August until about May, I only knew one person in the area. So I would watch The Office and see them go to the restaurants and schools and businesses I went to at home, and that was really funny. Scranton is as ridiculous in real life as it is on the show."

What is your favorite part of being a teacher at Ballet Petite?
"I love seeing the students go through the process of really working hard to grasp a concept and apply it to their dancing. It's so rewarding to see them take a correction, struggle with it, keep working on it, and then see the improvement. There are a few classes in particular where the students just seemed to encourage each other, and inspire the best in each other. This past year I had one class in particular, a Ballet I on Monday nights who always tried their very best, even if they were having a difficult time. At the beginning of the session there was a bit of a mix of the level of the students. But one class later in the session during their Tendu combination, I realized every single one of them had straight, turned out legs, their feet were pointed, and they were all beautifully placed. I was really so proud of them, individually and as a group. The students are so sweet, and so many of them have a strong desire to learn and grow. They make me so happy - I go home and call my friends and brag about them!"

Anymore fun facts you would like to share about yourself?
"I'm so excited to get married next July and then hopefully have my own little ballerinas!"

Ballerinas Cure Headaches!

All day yesterday and today I have been struggling with a horrible headache! It has been the kind of headache that Tylenol, or Ibuprofen or whatever else can’t even cure. So far the only cure for my headache that I have found has been little ballerinas!

This morning while sitting at the front desk I could hear Miss Margie and her train of ballerinas calling, “Miss Elizabeth, Miss Elizabeth”. When they finally reached the front desk the ballerinas made a circle around me. Miss Margie told me that the ballerinas had heard I wasn’t feeling very well and wanted to help. They danced around me with beautiful golden wands and sang Somewhere Over the Rainbow (their theme for camp this week is, of course, “The Wizard of Oz”).

Once they were finished singing each ballerina tapped me with their wand sending me well wishes for a headache free day, and then floated back to their classroom like beautiful little fairies.

And so, for just a little while today, I had a reprieve from this nagging headache as thoughts of rainbows, and ruby slippers, and tornados filled my head.

American Girl Camp- Julie

Our Week 5 Camp for 5-7 year olds is the American Girl Camp-- the girls are learning all about Julie this week! This camp is EXTREMELY popular; we actually have 13 girls in camp this week, even though we usually limit our camps to 12. It can be hard to say no to excited ballerinas!

Our American Girl Camps are perfect for our 5-7 year olds. In addition to a ton of ballet, the campers learn a bit of history, dances from the doll's decade, do crafts from the decade, etc. What fun!

What's New This Week!

We are now in the fifth week of summer camps here at Ballet Petite, which means we are already halfway through the summer! This also means that school will be starting before you know it. We have everything you need to start your school year of dance off right in our boutique. The boutique is incredibly busy during the first month of the session, so my recommendation is always to buy early if you can!

In addition, daily camps are now being offered in McLean, and I have no doubt these camps will be filling up fast. Take advantage of being able to sign up for any day you would like, they are the most flexible camps we offer!

Due to our Happily Ever After Princess Camps being so popular in Bethesda, we have opened a new section of camp during the week of August 9th. The theme is "Angelina at the Palace," so make sure to book now as this camp will most likely fill up too!

Annie Fun

Today at the end of their beloved ballerina camp, two of my former students decided to sign up for Broadway Baby camp in a couple of weeks!! I am so excited for these girls to get their first glimpse into the world of Musical Theatre! The week they signed up for (the week of July 26th) the theme will be Annie!

Ladies and gentlemen are you ready for a fun fact about Miss Elizabeth? When I was a senior in High School, I played Miss Hannigan in our school’s production of Annie! What a fun show, and what a fun role to play! As those of you who know me (and those of you who don’t can tell just from my blog entries), I am nothing like Miss Hannigan! But isn’t that the joy of Musical Theatre? To have the chance to become someone else, to step outside the box and take on something new? How wonderful! I am so excited for these little ballerinas to learn the joy of acting and the art of singing while continuing their love for dance!

Maybe they are future Broadway stars…. Maybe!

Writing a History

One of the things I love the most about working at Ballet Petite is that, as it is a developing company, my imput truly makes a difference in shaping the company. We are in a constant state of "trial and error," and so I am given the opportunity to take my ideas, implement them, and see what happens!

This way of working is found both in the office and in the studios.

Production, Here I Come!

As some of you may already know I am currently working towards my Masters in Theatre Education at the Catholic University of America. The Professors in CUA’s drama department never fail to amaze me; but what impresses me even more is that I am able to carry so much of what I learn back to my life at Ballet Petite.

Last night my Production Design class had a guest professor, Gail Beach, CUA’s Drama Department Head! Gail is an extremely talented costume designer. I’ve always thought of Gail in the theatrical setting, but last night I found out that Gail has been extremely involved in the world of dance! She has designed for Maryland Ballet Company, Washington Ballet, Dance Kaleidoscope, and Ballet West! She’s also designed for the Folger Shakespeare (where former Ballet Petite teacher Miss Roxi performed earlier this year!!). Currently Gail is also the costume designer for Doug Hamby Dance.

Obviously I love the performing arts, but the visual arts have never come easily to me. But after last night I can now draw bodies for costume renderings, and even have an understanding of how to draw fabric so that the drawings have a real-life quality. Maybe one of these days I’ll get a chance to put some of these new skills into practice at Ballet Petite! Before you know it, I’ll be at Production designing costumes along side the phenomenal Miguelina!

Another one of my professor’s describes theatre as “the thief of all the arts”; well, I contest that Ballet Petite is “a thief of all the arts” too. What a beautiful concept, and how lucky are our parents, students and staff are to be a part of it.

The Sounds of Camp

While working at the front desk at Ballet Petite McLean each morning I can hear the voices of our campers drifting through the hallways. I love to hear the singing, the shouts, and the giggles. It keeps me smiling and inspired as I complete my assignments each day. However, this week, McLean’s camps are ending at noon, instead of our usual 3pm! This means that by 12:30 it is pretty quiet in here! When the campers go home each day I miss the sound of their precious voices drifting through the halls. I can’t wait to see them all again tomorrow!

Annie Camp!

I happened, by chance, to find myself in the closet behind one of our studios this morning while "Annie" camp was in full-swing. Our 5-7 year old camp is a riot! Miss Katie has those kids moving from the moment they walk in at 9 am to the second they leave at 3! Don't get me wrong, they have their down-time with arts and crafts, snack time, etc. but I think this really is the ideal age for this particular camp. Every little girl who walks in wants their shot at being cast as Annie in the end-of-the-week performance, and BOY do they sing and dance their little hearts out (regardless of how they are cast!)

Looking forward to seeing the big show on Friday!

Ballet Performance Company News!

The 2010 Nutcracker Auditions for Ballet Performance Company will be here before you know it! We already held round one of auditions, so this will be the second round before school starts. In Potomac, auditions will be held on Wednesday, August 4th at 6:00 with sign in at 5:45. If you have a dancer will be be 5 or older by September 1st, they can audition to perform in The Nutcracker. It's an experience that they won't want to miss!

Big news for the upcoming 2010-2011 school year is the rehearsals for the Potomac and Kentlands students will now be held in Potomac! Rehearsals were held in the Kentlands last year, and Potomac is a bit more central and easily accessible to most students in that area. I am very excited to see the performers rehearsing starting in September!

New Daily Camps!!!

Next week marks the start of something new and exciting at Ballet Petite McLean! Beginning next week (July 19th), Ballet Petite McLean will be offering daily camps in addition to our week long specialty camps!

Our week long specialty camps are very specific for each age group and are generally broken up into camps for 2 ½ - 3 ½ year olds, camps for 3 – 4 year olds, camps for 4-5 year olds, and camps for 5 – 7 year olds!

Our daily camps, on the other hand, are for a wider age range and are designed to accommodate all students ages 3 through 7. This structure is perfect for busy moms and dads who may need just a day here or there to keep their ballerinas, both big and small, entertained and happy!

The themes for our daily camps include Animal Kingdom, Become a Ballerina, Disney Princess, Dr. Seuss and more!! Each camp will include fun crafts, games, and of course lots of dancing! Camps will run from 9:00-12:00, or 12:00-3:00; sign up for both time blocks in one day, and get a discount on your second camp!

I am very excited for these daily camps to begin at McLean; they have been very popular at our Cabin John and Kentlands locations and I think that the families at Ballet Petite McLean will love this new option as well!

Fun Camps in Potomac and Kentlands!

Ballet Petite camps are amazing all around, with highly specialized camps offered in Bethesda and McLean and our daily fairytale adventures in Potomac and Kentlands. This week in Potomac, the theme is Fairytale Princess, which always proves to be a great week of camp. With stories like Princess and the Pea, The Frog Prince, The Twelve Dancing Princesses, Rapunzel and Swan Lake, how could you go wrong?

In the Kentlands this week, the theme is Party Surprise. Who doesn't love a party! The stories this week for Kentlands includes Teddy Bears Picnic, Miss Spiders Tea Party, Angelina's Birthday Surprise, Goldilicious and The Birthday Doll. It's an exciting week with fun-filled stories!

Week 4 of Camps?!

Can you believe we're nearly half-way through camps already?! I was SHOCKED to find myself cancelling those Week 5 low-enrolled camps this morning! These weeks are just flying by! Registration for our Fall Session is really starting to pick up now-- people are already getting excited for Back-to-School.

Our back-to-school stock has started to be delivered in massive amounts! You would not believe how many of boxes of tights we had in last week. All to get our little ballerinas ready for their classroom debut!

Fixin' up Ballet Petite

Well, we have all sorts of exciting things going on in Bethesda! In addition to the end-of-the-week camp shows, we are getting ready for next week, AND we have tons of repairs going on! Everything looks bright and shiny here, and we're definately in for an exciting week of camps next week!

Next week is the first week this summer that we have camps running in all six studios! Camps are filling up quickly here in Bethesda!

Home Again

I have been teaching in Bethesda all week. I had SO much fun with my Tutu Sweet Ballerinas in our Goldilocks and the Three Bears camp. However- I must say- it feels nice to back in McLean! The whole Ballet Petite staff really chipped in and kept things running smoothly and looking nice while I was away from my “home”! I’ll be happy to be officially back in McLean all of next week!!

More McLean!

I have had the pleasure of being present at our McLean studio for the past couple of days and the atmosphere has been so relaxed! I feel as though everyone always has a different mentality and laid back attitude during the summer.

McLean is now offering daily camps, just like Potomac and Kentlands! They start the week of July 19th and I think they will prove to be just as packed. Potomac and Kentlands camps are moving right along. Next week, Potomac's theme is Fairytale Princess and Kentlands' theme is Birthday Surprise. With a different story each day, it will no doubt be a fun filled week!

Goldilocks

Today was a very special day in Ballerina Camp! When this week’s camps began on Tuesday I had a one camper who was particularly shy, and today she finally came out of her shell! It was beautiful to watch her interact with the other ballerinas, and laugh, and smile, and sing! I hope she is just as out-going tomorrow and that she “wows” her parents in our performance of Goldilocks & The Three Bears!

I’ve been at our Bethesda location all week, and I’m anxious to head back to McLean tomorrow! I hope everyone is enjoying Broadway Baby Camp over at McLean; I’m sure you are!!

Back from Vacation!

Summer is a time to take vacations, and I just came back from mine! I was thrilled to find that summer camps are bustling with students and moving along wonderfully. It's hard to believe we are already in Week 3 of camp, and the summer will be over before we know it. Soon Fall classes will start and we will wonder where the summer went. Time moves so fast!

I'm seeing an increase in Fall enrollment everyday which is very exciting! Fall Registration Requests

We've entered a heavy registration request period here at Ballet Petite. Each year, we create a basic schedule for the fall, leaving plenty of space for parents to request specific classes at specific times with specific teachers. The requests have been coming in hordes over the last few weeks! People are starting to think about the new school year, and so they're trying to get their schedules nailed down.

It's always a bit tricky to make all of the puzzle pieces fit, but we certainly are doing our best!

Summer Interns

As we offer camps primarily for our younger students, we offer internship opportunities for our students ages 9 and up. This gives aspiring dance teachers the chance to assist in a classroom for a week of camp and to learn the ins and outs of Ballet Petite. In addition to helping to prep and break down the studio each day, interns will help with crafts, play games, and sometimes even add to the choreography the teacher has written!

Our intern program has gotten VERY popular this year, especially in Bethesda. We have at least one intern in every camp, sometimes even two! It is a wonderful way for our older students to build confidence and experience.

Back to Camp!

I can't believe we're already into our third week of camp here at Ballet Petite! The weeks are just FLYING by! Camps are pretty filled this week, and seem to be filling up for the rest of the summer as well!

This week is a short week at Ballet Petite, as we were closed yesterday because of the holiday. That means teachers and students will be working extra hard to prepare their dances for the big performance on Friday!

We are all ready for a 3-day weekend here at Ballet Petite. Camps are such fun, but those kids have SO much energy! I think we are all looking forward to a few days to rest and relax.

Even though we're closed on Monday, we have incorporated some holiday treats into next week's camps. Campers can prepare themselves for a very patriotic week at Ballet Petite!

Choosing the crafts for each week's camps has become something of a coveted task here at Ballet Petite. It's so nice to lock yourself in an oriental trading wonderland and get to be a little creative with matching crafts to specifically themed camps. I spent nearly an hour on it today, and it was

Ballet Petite Adventures

Today was another adventure at Ballet Petite! Sophie, the Company Direct of Bethesda, and I headed out to move a bunch of story boxes! First we picked up a ton of story boxes from McLean; their eventual destination would be our Production Warehouse where they will be refurbished for the new school year! Our next stop- Kentlands! Our third musketeer, Sarah, is out of town this week and so we went over to deliver their necessary camp supplies for next week. As we were getting out of the car (piled high with story boxes) I heard, “Uh-oh…”. We had inadvertently locked the keys inside the car. True to Ballet Petite’s work ethic, we didn’t sit around and wait for someone to rescue us- we took an inventory of all of Kentlands props and tuts! We were surrounded by them! Finally a coworker came to the rescue with a spare set of keys and we were able to successfully finish our production move!
